WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT GOING TO CHURCH – KEEPING THE SABBATH ?

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

Exodus 20:8-11 KJV

As I went to Church on Sunday, I noticed a Mom walking with her two children. They were doing their morning exercising. The only thing was, they were exercising their bodies and not their souls by not going to Church. I see this often when driving to Church, seeing people out in their yards working and not honoring the Sabbath Day. Every Sunday many people go to church while others are sleeping or engaged in other weekend activities. Since our weekends are limited, should we spend part of it in church? Church is repetitious but so is life. The days of our lives are structured around cycles of work, eating, family and recreation times. Any of these activities can become boring if we don’t strive to find something interesting or enjoyable about them. Sunday mornings at church are a time to make new friends and renew old ones, to learn about the Bible and share problems as well as to thank God for another week of life. The Bible says, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 KJV  The goal in going to church is to seek to build our relationship with God and others. Many people go to church to fulfill an obligation through some ritual and so are reduced to actions without meaning. Church worship is all about an encounter with God and others that changes who we are. Not going to church on a Sunday morning because you deserve a sleep-in does not explain why you miss church on Saturday or Sunday night. The problem is much deeper than the time of the day, it is a matter of selfishness. Are you afraid that if you get involved it will cost you time and money, and that the Church is all about just taking your money ? Or do you want to have control of your time and money ? You will miss out on the friendships and the opportunities that would be a good influence in the lives of others. Each of us will have to decide where to spend our time and money and will either invest it in some purpose or waste it on the pleasures of the moment. Jesus said, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:” Matthew 6:19-20 KJV  So, why and when did we decide that Sunday is set aside for Christ, rather than the Sabbath, or the seventh day of the week ? In Bible times the Jewish custom was, and still is today, to observe the Sabbath day on Saturday. While some believe the transition from Saturday to Sunday worship began right after the resurrection, others see the change as a gradual progression over the course of history. Today, many Christian traditions believe Sunday is the Christian Sabbath day. Like in the verse, “And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.” Luke 6:5 KJV  This is implying that He has the power to change the Sabbath to a different day. I believe we get a clear answer to this question in the New Testament. It says, “One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.” Romans 14:5-6 KJV  Finally, as Romans 14 instructs, we should be “fully convinced” that whichever day we choose is the right day for us to set aside as a day of worship. Just read the bible and follow God’s rule. The truth is in the Bible. What can we do to make each Sunday special ? Go and learn about God. We may not learn something new every week, but we can always be encouraged by the truths of God’s Word. Go and fellowship with others. We need each other in this Christian journey. Don’t get sidetracked by looking at the faults of others. Look to Jesus. He is the One that died on the cross and shed His blood to pay for your sins so you could have that free gift of eternal life. Amen
